Here's an interesting one to start the topic:

UFO blamed for destroyed British wind turbine

Debate erupted on Thursday over who or what caused the mysterious destruction of a giant wind turbine in northern England - with everything from UFOs to the freezing winter weather taking the blame.

Residents of Conisholme in Lincolnshire discovered that a 72-foot (21.9-metre) long metal blade has been torn off a turbine at their local wind farm while another has been badly damaged.

Some residents reported seeing strange lights streaking towards the wind farm, prompting speculation a UFO collided with one of the 213-foot tall turbines, newspaper reports said. It was unclear exactly when the crash would have occurred.

Local councillor and turkey farmer Robert Palmer said he saw a bright white light with an orange edge as he drove close to the turbine on Sunday morning.

"I am not counting it out that it was a UFO," said Palmer, who wants local authorities to investigate what caused the mangled metal.

The strange lights were the latest in a series of such sightings reported since New Year's Day in northern England, according to Russell Kellett of UFO enthusiasts, the Flying Saucer Bureau.

"I've been inundated (with reports of sightings)," Kellett said.

"There's no doubt something hit it," he said.

Peter Schubel, from the University of Nottingham, said it would take a 10-tonne load to create that kind of damage - if the blades were still.

But Schubel, an expert in design and manufacture of such blades, said the force needed would be much less if the turbine was turning or it was hit by a moving object.

"It's definitely not a bird. It could be ice thrown from a neighbouring turbine that struck it," Schubel said.

"Most turbines have an anti-icing system on the blades and maybe it failed to prevent the ice build-up," he said.

However a mechanical failure was also cited as a possible cause. Fraser McLachlan, chief executive of GCube, which insures more than 25,000 wind turbines worldwide, said such incidents occurred about five or six times a year.

"It does happen that a blade will sometimes just come off a machine for one reason or another," he said.

"We don't normally see things like aircraft - or UFOs - hitting them. It's usually a mechanical failure that causes the blade to separate from the main hub."

The Ministry of Defence said it was not looking into the incident.

Apparently those turbines are safe, well let the debate rage, how safe are they and what destroyed this one...

Those blades are situated some distance above the ground, presumably you cannot walk into them and any pilot would be smart enough not to fly low near turbines or anything that might cause an accident for that matter.

What makes you conclude that? Surely aliens smart enough to space travel would be smart enough to avoid objects in the road?
Then again, maybe we're not the only ones that send monkeys into space.
